Karthika Masam is the most sacred month for Telugu Hindus, sacred to both Shiva and Vishnu. Daily rituals include lighting deepams at dawn and dusk, Karthika Somavara Vrata (Mondays), and reading the Karthika Puranam.

Step by Step

How to perform the ritual

Wake before dawn, bathe, wear a fresh dhoti/madi.

Light a ghee diya facing east at sunrise and one facing west at sunset — every day.

On Mondays (Karthika Somavara), fast till evening, perform Rudrabhishekam.

Read one chapter of Karthika Puranam daily.

On Poornima (full moon), light 365 diyas around a peepal or tulsi plant.

Offer bael leaves to Shiva and tulsi to Vishnu.

Break the month on the final day with a temple visit and family satsang.
